Cycling 50-miles to help young girls!

Helping young girls around the Boston area find a good, strong role model.unnamed

So, my BF’s boss signed him up for this road race for MS 3 years ago. He legit got on a bike- not a regular bike you get for your 5th birthday, but a bike that costs around a grand – I’ve seen some for 8 grand$$$ (craze) done up with skinny tires, clip in shoes with some type of carbon frame.  Nico rode from Boston to Ptown, cape cod – like 180 miles! uhm yeah I’m exhausted driving my car that far – forget having to peddle my way there.  Check out the page to support MS and ride yourself next year!

but yeah funny thing, I ended up buying myself a road bike last year and since I’m in the Big Sister program felt the need to sign up for this race in honor of the organization….We are raising money on behalf of Big Sister Association of Greater Boston for the 2014 Rodman Ride for Kids. This ride is the #1 single-day athletic fundraiser in the nation supporting at-risk kids.

There’s my pitch for donations. 100% goes to support these wonderful children in the world we live in today!

p.S. How I’m going to ride the 50 mile portion?… I don’t know! Since getting a pup, my training has slowly disappeared!! Better gear up this weekend and put some major miles on … someone is going to be sore!

I make this at least once a week! Tofu Scramble (Vegan)

I make this at least once a week! Tofu Scramble (Vegan)

I went Vegan for Lent, so 40 days. I made sure we finished everything that comes from an animal before we started so we wouldn’t be tempted. When I say, we, I’m saying I made Nico do this with me! He did it more by default since I was the one grocery shopping, packing lunches and making dinner while he started grad school ..  When we got back from our Jamaican vaca- all inclusive, so alcohol and food all the time non stop – We needed a cleanse which is how the 2 things came together (Lent & Cleanse) = Vegan Challenge

Anyways, his cousins got me this book for our housewarming party. ISA DOES IT – all Vegan recipes. At first, I didn’t’ know what Vegan was.. I thought vegetarian- only eat vegetables- no meat. okay can’t be that hard. But when I realized Vegan meant NO animal products whatsoever, I knew I had a challenge ahead of me. Being for Polsih decent, there really isn’t a meal that doesn’t include some type of meat.. Kielbasa, hello! or dairy- Sour cream on top of CHEESE Pierogie — yummmy, sour cream on top of everything for that matter!  (My 1st Vegan Bible-Legit amazing!)

So Nico’s cousins (my inspirations for this challenge) have been vegan for 5, going on 6 years now. I will have them guest blog soon to offer up some advice and give insight into why they went Vegan and the benefits/challenges they face…

But in the meantime, let me go ahead and share this Tofu Scramble Recipe– I had my friend over last night and she requested I make her this b/c its that delish!! I  usually make it at the end of the work week; when I have leftover veggies and need a way to wrap them all up into something easy and good. I usually pair it with potatoes pancakes, vegan garlic bread, in a sandwich, with a salad, on top of quinoa… anything you feel like really!

K’s Closet – Look inside my personal style

K’s Closet – Look inside my personal style

Layers
I love layers for many reasons – #1: the temp change from outdoors to indoors (&vice versa). How quickly you can go from 100 degrees outside to be freezing inside (think: grocery stores). I frequently wear blazers or cardigans over basic tee-shirts and dresses, as well as wearing scarves and tights. This really plays with proportion and not only helps with the temp change, but can make your outfit!

Vintage                                                                                                                                                        A lot of my pieces are vintage, or at least vintage-inspired 😉 I LOVE looking through thrift or vintage stores to find some unique items—Bonus: they’re usually really cheap and you wont be seeing anyone else with that exact piece!

Prints
From floral sundresses to embroidered skirts to stripe and polka dot printed tees, I love to wear a lot of different patterns especially when I mix and match. The key though is to either wear different patterns that share a color scheme or use similar patterns (like small polka dots and large polka dots.)

Colors Although the majority of my day-wear is in neutral colors like black, white, camel, navy, grey, brown, and olive, I do try to add pops of color. I don’t often wear outfits with more than one major color – my outfits are generally neutral with a splash of color here and there. Investing in high-quality neutral items is a great way to create a wardrobe that is versatile while still being visually interesting. Items like classic blazers, well-fitting jeans, solid-color dresses, leather jackets, and blouses can be remixed again and again into numerous different outfits. This is also a really easy way to get dressed: you just mix together some neutral basics and then add one colorful piece.Layers, Blazers, Basics

Girly Details
In addition to being retro-inspired, my style is also quite feminine. I often gear towards dresses or skirts and pieces with lace or floral detail. I adore shirts with a fun collars. Collars are my everything – probably has something to do with being in a Catholic school uniform for 13 years!

Shoes                                                                                                        I may or may not have too many shoes- depending how you look at it. Anyways, I believe I have high arches- legit wearing flat shoes HURTS the bottom of my feet. My mother never wore flats – not even sneakers for gym class back in school- so I know I get this shoe thing from her.  My Bf doesn’t get it – but then again he’s a boy so why would he! Don’t get me wrong, I got some Free Runs for the gym, original Toms and sandals for the summer – I’m trying to mix in more flats, but I prefer and do look for a small lift- small heel in everything! Ankle wedges and Ankle booties are my everything!

Accessories                                                                                                                                         Part of what makes a look so put-together and what helps clothing turn into outfits are accessories. Sunglasses, a statement watch, and large scarves – never underestimate the power of a good scarf! This is an easy way to dress up an otherwise basic outfit.

Take Risks
Despite usually sticking to my tried-and-true wardrobe pieces, I will occasionally take fashion risks (My friends always question me when I tell them what my outfit is going to be!) Like high-waist wide leg pants, menswear-inspired outfits, over-alls, wedge sneakers or just anything that you think wouldn’t go well together! Not being afraid to try out avant-garde looks is an important factor to my style.
I try to never look overdone – I love to appear effortless, as if I just rolled out of bed and threw on the first thing I saw (which is rarely ever the case haha…I usually try on a few pieces before I go with my outfit – but no one needs to know that 😉

Motto: Look good do good! Try not to leave the house until YOU (and only you) feel comfortable and happy in what you have on 

Polish Beet Soup

Polish Beet Soup

Colder nights mean summer is winding down and the season for warm SOUP is upon us. I’d totally be lying if I said I didn’t eat soup even if its 90 degrees out! I grew up with soup being a part of almost every meal. My Babcia (grandmother) would ALWAYS be making some variety with whatever summer veggies were around, so I am used to eating soup in the summer… but for everyone else… Welcome to Soup Season!

I had some extra beets and potatoes left over from the Farmers Market, and I feel like I haven’t had eggs in a while…. so as a result… I made Borscht for dins. Here is my recipe derived mostly from memory and taste. I don’t really like to follow recipes; so I kind of make it work until it tastes AMAZE.

Roadtrip from MA to PA to get a puppy!

Roadtrip from MA to PA to get a puppy!

So, everyone who knows me knows I  want as many kids as physically (& financially) possible!! So, I know that wont be happening until marriage for me…(and that’s another topic I can go on and on about..–Next post 😉 …So whats the next BEST thing ever?…a puppy of course.

I’m allergic to cats (really bad), rabbits and prob anything else that has 4 paws and a heartbeat BUT weirdly enough, I haven’t had any bad reactions to dogs! and trust me, these last few months, I have made sure I could puppy-sit and be around as many dogs as possible!

However, as much as I love to “YOLO” (verb form?), I cant take the risk of getting something sooo adorbs and then having an allergy to him (I don’t like taking any medications unless 100% necessary- so allergy meds everyday-not an option for me)

With that said, after months and months of e-mails, phone calls, Instagram dog stalking, pet owner harassing, We found a potential breeder!!! AND we are leaving after work to drive to PA… only 6 hrs!? to meet and hopefully get 1 out of the 2 pups left!!!

okay… I know what people will say next…YOU ARE NOT RESCUING?! Listen, I totally support rescuing animals..#whoRescuedwho — I get it! I do. I want to. I have called about 6-8 different rescue shelters around to see if they have this type of hypoallergenic PUPPY that I have been dreaming of! (legit-I have dreams at night with the dog in them) and NONE. NONE are available. which makes sense… it is a designer breed…that have become really popular ESP in the Boston area.

I want to train the pup MY way, sorry- don’t want someone else’s baggage.. NOT YET. Not for my First Pup! I stand by my word… that I will volunteer and help at rescue clinics because they are important and I want to help but I also want what I want 🙂

My whole life I’ve been told what I can and can’t have or do… anyone else have a Eastern European mother? enough said.

So, I’m excited for this Road Trip with my handsome man tonight to hopefully add a new member to our little family and make it 3!

Mental Health day

Took a mental health day from work today! I think everyone needs one of those once in a while. It’s important to step away from the M-F routine every now and then and reflect, mediate… focus on YOU.

Hey… that’s the only way I could actually sit down and start this blog…. I’m excited to share my experiences, my thoughts, my fears, my goals and hopefully help change someones outlook on life for the better!

My BFF and I went to this yoga class after work today.Honestly, we didn’t know what we were doing. I mean the thought of being a yogi…yogini? sounds great and relaxing and I feel like those people just have a great outlook on life!! But it’s not the easiest thing, especially when you just keep resorting to “child’ pose” because you can’t stand your knees on your elbows!… not yet at least

I’ll be sure to keep with it and one day call myself a Yogiiii!!

Anyways,  It was by the water-90 something degrees with about 50 people! So great to be in such a positive environment  and OUTDOORS esp after sitting in the office all day… Oh! and if that wasn’t amaze enough- the classes are Freeeee 🙂

be sure to check out “Yoga with Shira” on Facebook!  She was such a great instructor – class sched should be up there too!
